PUWER applies to the selection and use of hired work equipment. The hirer still needs appropriate training, information and supervision. Hiring a machine does not transfer the whole responsibility for safe use to the supplier.

Lifting operations introduce further requirements under LOLER where applicable. The person organising a lift must consider the equipment, load and operation. Do not assume that all earthmoving is lifting work, or that adding an attachment leaves the original machine specification unchanged.

How A Commercial Hire Enquiry Progresses

Begin with a brief covering the postcode, work description, dates and plant categories. Include the expected hire duration and any phased deliveries. Identify who can answer technical questions and who will receive the equipment at the site.

Review the proposed machines and attachments against the job requirements. Confirm transport, unloading, working hours, fuel arrangements and any operator requirement. If you need operated plant, state that explicitly so the quote can distinguish the operator scope from machine supply.

Before delivery, check access and establish a safe receiving area. At handover, confirm equipment identity, instructions and relevant inspection information. Record condition and agree how faults, breakdowns, extensions and collection requests will be handled.

During hire, keep the equipment secure and carry out the checks allocated to your team. Raise defects promptly and stop unsafe use. Agree off-hire and collection in accordance with the supplier terms, including any continuing responsibilities while machinery awaits collection.

Comparing Plant Hire Quotations

The machine category, attachments, duration and transport requirements affect cost. Fuel, cleaning, insurance and damage arrangements can also change the total. Ask for a written breakdown rather than comparing only the daily or weekly machine rate.

A change of machine midway through the job can affect transport and programme costs. Give a realistic scope at the outset and flag uncertain ground or access conditions. Where work is phased, ask whether staggered delivery and collection is practical instead of keeping unused machinery on site.
